HONOR'S READING

rarebooks

Honor's Reading is another way we are trying to challenge our better readers, and reward them for making a little extra effort.  It allows students preparing to go on to college and opportunity to read from a college recommended list of both modern and historical classics.

This is a voluntary class in which our students qualify by testing at the highest level on our Starr Reader tests, and reading above grade level on ITED testing.  Students who qualify are given the option to participate in Honor's Reading, which will show up on their transcripts as an Honors class.

Students must complete two novels each quarter under the following guidelines.

  1. 1.  A student must complete a fiction novel from our college reading list and pass a test on it with at least 80% of their questions correct.
  2. 2.  A student must read a non-fiction novel and complete a book talk with Mr. Adams or Mr. Reed.

While some students see this as an easier way to pass RAPP, most have begun to understand that these readings are harder, and demand more of an effort during their reading.  It is a great way to help them prepare for some of the reading demands at the collegiate level.

Students who qualify and choose to participate in Honor's Reading reap the following rewards.

  • They earn an honor's credit which looks great on their transcripts.
  • They will be more prepared for much of the literature they will be required to read at the collegiate level.
  • They become eligible for Honor's reward field trips.

HONOR'S READING LIST - (Fiction)

The following novels are recommended by colleges across America, and they make-up the fiction part of our Honor's Reading requirements.
