Fluency

          Fluency

You may be wondering what exactly is fluency and why is it so important. Fluency refers to a student's speed, smoothness, and ease of oral reading. Fluent readers read more quickly and smoothly, allowing them to focus on comprehension. Fluent readers gain more meaning from the text they read

In order to increase fluency rates we are going to be working on a reading passage each week. On Monday your child will read a short passage out loud as they are timed for 1 minute. They will practice the passage during the week and be timed again on Friday. At the first grade level the expectation is that students should be able to read 56 or more words per minute by the middle of first grade and 61 or more words per minute by the end of first grade.
